Fence Jumping

Fence Jumping

Frustrating and Dangerous Behavior

Fence-jumping is difficult to stop because it is very self rewarding activity, the reward is much greater than the anticipated punishment.  It is important to first try and determine the root cause.  Some examples of the root cause are:

– Anxiety        – Fear                        – Weak bond

– Boredom – Seek out a mate     – Self defense

Making sure you exercise your dog is extremely important.  A tired well exercised dog is much less likely to bored enough to jump a fence.   Neutering your dog is also an important part of prevention and overall good health.

To effectively correct a fence jumping dog you must prevent the dog from jumping to begin with. Each time your dog Jumps this behavior is being strengthened and reinforced  and will most likely  re-occur.  Correcting the dog after he has escaped is not an option, because dogs live in the now, they will not understand the reason behind the correction after the fact.

Forming a positive bond with your dog and becoming a strong pack leader is one of the most important factors in creating a balance for your dog.  This process takes time, and patience.  When you are a strong leader your dog will follow.  Be consistent 24/7. You cannot demonstrate this behavior only on occasion you must be committed to showing leadership at all times.  Reference leadership guidelines with your trainer.
